This coming Tuesday is the Introduction to Prolife Canterbury (we know it is late, and apologise profusely) as well as a pro-life training workshop. You will meet people in the prolife movement in Canterbury (Prolife Canty and others) and learn how to speak about abortion. You will gain essential knowledge of the facts and figures relating to abortion worldwide and in New Zealand.
Brendan Malone will be speaking. He is a very experienced and knowledgeable pro-life advocate. In his talk he will respond to the most commonly used pro-abortion arguments, and present evidence based reasons and the latest research to show why pro-abortion arguments lack validity. You will learn how to intelligently and rationally respond to the most common pro-abortion arguments.
If you ’strongly disapprove’ of the unseen and unspoken murder of 18000 Kiwis each year come along and learn how to stand up and be a voice for them.
What you need to know:
7:00 pm, Tuesday 30th of March
St. Matthew’s Parish Hall, 108 Jeffreys Road
Please bring a small donation to cover costs.
There is also a Facebook event:

Just a quick update. A number of our members met on Thursday night to watch the independent 2006 film, Bella as a relaxing end of term event.
It is the story of one day in the life of a young waitress who has discovered that she is pregnant, and her workmate, the caring, quiet and thoughtful chef who spends the day with her. The acting is superb, the film captivating and the score riveting. I won’t tell you anymore – I knew little enough when I began watching, save that it was a “pro-life” film. But I’ll leave it up to you to determine what sort of film it is.
If you haven’t yet seen the film we highly recommend it!

Dr. Glenn Peoples spoke to us on Friday night on the subject of Abortion, Morality and Law. We had a good turn-out of around 50 people including Ken Orr who is the spokesperson for Right to Life in the current major Abortion law case currently awaiting judgement in the High Court.
You can listen to the talk here at Glenn’s blog (scroll down to the bottom of the post). Click here to download an MP3 file of the talk. Hoping to get the video from the talk up on Youtube shortly

The audience
Glenn has kindly provided us with his Powerpoint slides which I will summarise below. His notes from the talk are also available, click here to download them as they are a great resource of information specifically related to abortion in New Zealand.

Dr. Glenn Peoples explains a common pro-choice argument
An outline of the Powerpoint presentation is below. Click here to download Glenn’s notes from the talk which go into much more detail on each of these points.
Abortion: Is it Immoral and Should it be Illegal?
Dr. Glenn Peoples
Is Abortion Immoral?
The Traceback Argument
- It is prima facie [at face value] immoral to kill a human being
- Abortion kills a human being (as shown via the traceback argument)
- Therefore abortion is prima facie immoral
The Argument from the Future
- What makes killing wrong?
- Killing is wrong because it takes away a future like mine
- Does Abortion Take Away a Future like Mine?
- It is prima facie wrong to take away a future like mine.
- Abortion takes away a future like mine
- Therefore Abortion is prima facie immoral
Should Abortion be Illegal?
- Some people say “I’m personally opposed, but pro choice.”
- However,
- Abortion is immoral because it destroys things that are identical with living human persons
- Abortion is immoral because it takes away a future like mine
- The reasons for deeming abortion immoral also justify making it illegal
Objections
- The objection from imposing morality
- “Making abortion illegal won’t stop it”

- The objection from illegal abortion and maternal death
Abortion: Is it Immoral and Should it be Illegal? YES
Glenn has also done
a blog post where he has noted down the question and answer section at the end of the talk which is quite interesting reading. So check it out…
Prolife UC thanks Glenn and his wife Ruth for flying up from Dunedin to speak to us, and we hope to have them back again sometime soon!

Dr. Glenn Peoples, PhD
Prolife UC presents a talk by Dr. Glenn Peoples, PhD…
ABORTION, MORALITY and LAW
Friday 31st July 7.30pm
A3 lecture theatre, University of Canterbury (map below)
Is abortion immoral, and should it be legal? The abortion controversy is a persistent one in New Zealand that has seen revived interest lately. Dr Glenn Peoples provides reasons for deeming abortion immoral and for its legal restriction. He also considers some arguments for abortion rights and explains how to address these, showing that they overlook the fundamental moral issues involved.
Dr. Peoples will also be speaking at an event at 7:30pm on Thursday night in the same venue, and as the topic will be of interest to a wide range of people, we are advertising the talk on our website:
Chasing the Justificatory Goalpost: Public Justification and Religious Beliefs
Thursday 30th July 7.30pm
A3 lecture theatre, University of Canterbury (map below)
“There is a broad political tradition that we are a part of that we could call “the liberal democracy.” Some modern thinkers allege that in a liberal democratic society like ours, we should not advocate policies or ideas in the public square that are justified by our religious beliefs (e.g. policies on abortion, marriage, education etc). This is because these people advocate a principle of justification, whereby all policies must be justifiable to our fellow citizen in a certain way, and (as everyone knows, of course!) all policies that are justified by our religious beliefs cannot be justified to our fellow citizens in this way. I look at exactly what this principle of justification is, whether it’s any good (I argue that it needs improvement), and most importantly, I ask whether or not it’s really true that policies that have a religious basis really do fail to be justified in this way.”
Dr Peoples graduated from the University of Otago in 2008 with his PhD in philosophy. His areas of specialisation are ethics, philosophy of religion and political philosophy. He also runs a popular blog devoted to philosophy, theology and politics.
All welcome, donation appreciated

Scott Klusendorf has written an article entitled Five Bad Ways to Argue About Abortion. One of the mistakes he points out is known as the Ad hominem fallacy where people attack the person rather than refute the argument. The following is an excerpt from the article where he specifically deals with the challenge: you say you disagree with abortion – so how many babies have you adopted?
“Consider also the claim that pro-lifers are hypocritical to protest abortion unless they adopt babies they do not want aborted. For the moment, let’s assume there are not two million American families willing to do this, as is the case. How would the alleged reluctance of pro-lifers to adopt babies justify the act of abortion? While it is true that pro-life advocates should help those facing crisis pregnancies, it is not true that abortion is justified whenever that obligation is left unmet.
Imagine a bigot arguing, Unless you agree to marry my wife, you have no right to oppose me beating her. Or, Unless you are willing to adopt my three sons by noon today, I shall execute them. If you reject his ultimatum, is he morally justified performing acts of violence on innocent victims?”

Of course pro-lifers should offer to adopt unwanted babies whenever possible, and Prolife UC’s adoption offer stands. However attempting to defend abortion on the grounds that pro-lifers are not consistent when they don’t adopt, is poor logic.

University of Canterbury Students Association Society, Prolife UC takes abortion very seriously. In response to a letter to the editor of CANTA (Finn, 25 May), our society has committed to ensuring that any pregnant woman seeking an abortion is given the opportunity for their unborn child to be carried to term and then adopted.
In each case, our group will find a couple who will adopt the child of any woman who would have otherwise had her aborted. If we are unable to find a suitable couple, one of our members will adopt the child.
We are thankful to have already received an offer of adoption from a couple living in Rangiora. I have asked them for some background information on themselves and their family…
Pregnant, considering an abortion?
- We are Craig and Julie Thompson of Rangiora
- We have a family of 10 children in a large house on 24 Acres
- We have a supportive teenage daughter who cares
- We will care and support you during your pregnancy, birth and beyond
- We would like to openly adopt and care for your child
- We have a range of specialised support people available including doctors, midwives, councellors etc

Andy’s article on behalf of Prolife UC which was in CANTA in last week’s edition has received several responses in this week’s edition of the student magazine. We just want to highlight a factual error in the article. Because the outcome of the Court of Appeal case was so unexpected, the article had to be altered at the last minute, however the version that made it into CANTA was not the most recent one, and requires the following correction:
However in an unexpected turn of events, the Court of Appeal dismissed the case on Tuesday, determining that the original case should be re-heard in the High Court, saying the case was outside its jurisdiction. This will probably take place some time next year.
should be…
However in an unexpected turn of events, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal of the ASC on Tuesday, saying the case was outside its jurisdiction. Right to Life and the ASC will return to the High Court at an early date, where they will seek to clarify the declaratory orders of Justice Miller. The original ruling by Justice Miller still stands, and the case will not need to be re-heard.

Wow. We’ve been so busy getting the group established, and running meetings that we haven’t got round to blogging for a while! We’ll post an update shortly, bringing you all up to speed with how things are going for the new Prolife group on campus.
Prolife UC is kicking off term 2 with a big event which is open to all students on campus, as well as members of the public.
We are delighted to have Warwick Pascoe on campus to deliver his presentation, The Making of a Masterpiece on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
You may have seen the posters all around campus. On Tuesday this week we put up over a hundred posters saying GET A LIFE! to arouse people’s curiosity. Today we are putting up the second batch of posters (see below), which will have all the details of the event.

If you’re able to make it we’d love to see you there – it will be a breath-taking, eye-opening presenation – we guarantee!

On Friday morning our newly elected president (Lillian) and I met with Shelley who was the winner of the raffle that we ran over the 3 Clubs Days on Campus. The prize was a brand new DVD of the 2006 Toronto Independent Film Festival people’s choice award winner, Bella. Congratulations Shelley!

Lillian gives Shelley her prize
I reckon Bella is a magnificent film, currently number one in my list of faves. Here’s a very brief summary from a blog post I wrote a while ago.
It is a film that we all need to see.
